01 - Introduction

The Strait of Hormuz has long been regarded as one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints. Yet the events of June 2026 suggest that its strategic significance is no longer defined solely by the possibility of physical closure. Instead, competition increasingly revolves around the ability to shape expectations, influence navigation decisions, and generate geopolitical leverage while commercial traffic continues to flow.

During mid-June 2026, Iran linked developments in the Strait of Hormuz with broader negotiations involving the United States and regional security dynamics. 02 - Strategic Significance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically significant maritime chokepoints, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Indian Ocean. Beyond its geographical importance, the Strait functions as a critical node within the global energy, trade, and maritime logistics system.

Approximately one-fifth of global oil consumption and around one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade transit through the Strait. As a result, any disruption, restriction, or even credible uncertainty surrounding maritime access can rapidly influence global energy prices, shipping costs, insurance premiums, financial markets, and geopolitical risk assessments.

However, the strategic importance of the Strait extends beyond the volume of resources passing through it. Its true significance lies in the concentration of global dependence. Comparable patterns can be observed across maritime chokepoints, energy corridors, logistics networks, semiconductor supply chains, undersea cable systems, digital infrastructure, financial payment systems, and emerging artificial intelligence ecosystems. Although these systems differ in their technical characteristics, they share a common strategic logic: infrastructure increasingly functions as a mechanism through which geopolitical leverage can be exercised without requiring direct physical disruption.

Within the PER-003 research programme, the Strait of Hormuz therefore serves not only as a case study but also as the conceptual foundation for a broader analytical framework.
